Now for the steps:
Before we start we need an Apple ID and an admin account with root access. Open System preferences in the Apple menu and type in your Apple ID in the login item field. If you don’t know your Apple ID, you can look it up in the “About this Mac” dialog.
Make sure you have an admin account selected in the Log In as field in the User Account Preferences. Under admin accounts I have “login name” as username and my old Apple ID as login password.
After that I am getting the message that my password has expired. In that case you need to change your password and confirm the change in the dialog. Now login with your new password and type the following in the Terminal. Make sure to insert the correct disk label.
sudo diskutil eraseVolume “FreeAgent” HFS+
The procedure is quite easy but there are a few things that can go wrong:
The procedure can fail and I have a few times where I had to do the following:
sudo diskutil eraseVolume “FreeAgent” HFS+
sudo diskutil disableJournalVolume “FreeAgent”
sudo diskutil enableJournalVolume “FreeAgent”
I haven’t tried this method with SSD drives but from the above steps it should be possible.
Make sure you have 2GB of free space in your “/” partition.
