Placement of a capacitor for a DC-DC converter
I have been working on a DC-DC buck converter for a while now and after reading different designs online, I am wondering which one is more suitable for my application, especially considering that I am planning to use discrete components only (MOSFETs and a capacitor).

So I have a capacitor that will be placed on the top plate (Vout), but for some reason this seems a little redundant to me as both the input and output capacitors are already on the top and bottom plates. Is this really necessary?
My second option is to use this capacitor in the image below (source here).
In this design, the bottom and top plate capacitors are separated by a via that is connected to the drain and source terminals of the MOSFET.
What are the benefits of these designs compared to the first one?
