Now, getting started in Photoshop involves understanding a set of four basic types of tools:

Envelope tools

Fill tools

Gradient tools

Magic Wand tools

Adobe Photoshop Elements also includes many tools, such as marquee tools, which are built into the program; but its tools aren’t as powerful as those of Photoshop. Although Photoshop and Elements have a lot of tools in common, Elements still doesn’t provide the same set of tools as Photoshop.

As you work with Photoshop, you’ll also encounter several secondary tools and features, such as in-image masks, the Magic Wand, Smart Guides, and other useful features, as well as filters, which can be applied to certain layers or the whole image. You may also find some interesting features in the Brushes panel, as well as the numerous opacity-adjusting tools.

Understanding Photoshop’s four major work areas

Photoshop has four main areas: the Layers palette, the Timeline, the Image Area, and the Graphics Panel. Here’s a quick look at what they are and how they work. Figure 5-1 shows an image with four layers.

Understanding Layers

Layers have been with us since the inception of Photoshop. They can be used as a way to organize your work and make your edits. The most basic use of a layer is to create an “under layer” — an image layer that you place below all other image layers.

Figure 5-1 demonstrates the use of four layers in a drawing; these layers are organized into a multilayered document. (See Chapter 6 for more about layers.)

You can place new layers above, below, or in between other layers; this concept of placing one image on top of another is called layering. You can move, add, or delete layers at any time. Working in layers keeps your image organized and lets you apply different effects, filters, or other tools to different layers, thereby isolating specific layers for effects. You can also give layers individual names to help keep the layers organized. You can create layers by clicking the New Layer button on the Layers palette (refer to Figure 5-1).

To delete a layer, go to the Layer palette and right-click a layer and choose Delete Layer. To delete all layers in a document, select the

Intuitively understanding… a subgroup of a group

Let $G$ be a group. For any subgroup $H$ of $G$, what does “intuitively understanding” mean in the first sentence of the following sentence? It seems to me that the intuitive meaning should be that $H$ can be composed with various group elements. What is the intuitive meaning in this case?

The intuitive meaning is that if we have a group, then we can intuitively understand how the operations work.
If $F$ is a field and $G$ is a finite group, then we have a generalised concept of a vector space, but in the case of finite groups, the analogous concept is a subgroup of $G$.
In the case of finite groups, we often use the subgroup $H$ to create a vector space $V = G/H$. This concept allows us to make vector space calculations on finite groups, and this is just how we do such calculations in school.
However, if we are working in the more abstract setting of groups, then the meaning of $G/H$ is a little more complicated. We can build a group $G$ which looks like a vector space but is in fact infinitely dimensional. The best example of a non-orientable group is the dihedral group $D_n$, because it can be interpreted as both a vector space and a rotation around a circle.
However, with our intuitive understanding of a vector space, we can still say something about the above $D_n$. We know that if $H$ is the set of rotations around a circle, then the set of rotations by 90 degrees around a circle is $H$. So if we have the symbol $H$ for a subgroup, it stands to reason that the two other symbols stand for the same set.
In a sense, we may be confusing the set $H$ for a group, when you are thinking about the group $D_n$ in the abstract.
