Per Aspera: Per Aspera is a narrative experience revolving around the pursuit of a goal. When you start Per Aspera, you don’t have a goal. You’re a starfaring nomad from the planet Ramin, an ensign in the interstellar fleet known as the Black Wolf, a general in an interplanetary militia organization called the Black Ghost. You are in fact an officer in the Federation of Planetary Union, and that’s about it. But the game focuses on the actions of three characters named: Talon, Jack, and Thor. You have no defined role in their story, but as you undertake actions you become a factor in their future, and as such, you become their leader! In short, Per Aspera is like an interactive version of the movie Lion King. You play three major characters with some minor ones involved. Each character is given a 3-hour goal, and through the course of the entire game, you are tasked with carrying out enough actions to enable the character to reach that goal. Your actions are mainly just talking, as the game primarily revolves around conversations between characters. The reason for the featureless design is to make your decisions matter in the story. You may observe a character, tell them something, and have no idea if that person will remember the information you just gave them, much less act on it. Or, you may observe a character and decide to go ahead and commit a crime or act of sabotage, knowing that if you do, you may have to then tell them about it! The design was created as a way to make players feel more involved in their own story, and let them judge what direction their character is going to take. Essentially, the game is about choices. It’s a bit like Half-Life and Mass Effect. Three games, but the experience is more similar to Per Aspera than to Lion King, although the themes are similar, and the gameplay resembles Half-Life in some ways. There is a faster-paced, more action oriented approach to game play, but the game doesn’t have the simple resolution of the previous games. Still, the more you play, the more your decisions matter and become more consequential. A good example of this is the side story about how the Black Ghost got formed.
