Graphics layers

An important aspect of many CAD drawing programs is the ability to apply one or more layers to the drawing view. These layers are usually displayed as grayscale boxes in the drawing view, and can be used to categorize parts, materials and other details in the drawing. When an artist creates a CAD drawing, it is usually not known if the drawing will ultimately be in a two-dimensional or a three-dimensional format. When the drawing is complete, it is often still not known if the drawing will ultimately be used in the 2D or 3D format. In those cases, it can be difficult to select the appropriate layers to display in the appropriate drawing view. For these reasons, some CAD drawing programs support separate 2D and 3D drawing views, allowing the artist to work on the drawing in one view, while the final design and work is developed in the other view.
