IDM/SQL Server

Starting with AutoCAD 2011 and released on November 1, 2009, AutoCAD introduced IDM (Integrated Database Manager) which allows users to have a local SQL database, also called a “SQL Server” in AutoCAD. This database can be used to store information such as drawing-related data and CAD database elements (e.g. drawing data, drawings, blocks, notes, sketching, perspectives, dimensions, areas, profiles, names, etc.).

AutoCAD can create a new database in the current workspace and populate it with AutoCAD data when a drawing is opened. Data can be exported from the AutoCAD database to a Microsoft SQL Server,.mdb, Access or other database.

It is also possible to combine the AutoCAD database with the.mdb or other databases for simultaneous access. With this, all information of the current drawing, including dimensions, notes, and graphics, are stored in the AutoCAD database. When the drawing is saved, the AutoCAD database is updated accordingly and data from other databases can be saved together with the AutoCAD database.

Starting with AutoCAD 2013, database management is also possible through the SQL Server database stored in the Windows registry.
