Field of Glory II: Wolves at the Gate is set in 1792 during Napoleon’s advance on the left flank of the army and begins with a Second Coalition government. Germany and Austria make peace on precisely the same terms as those dictated during the previous failed First Coalition. England and Prussia ally. Austria has lost her northern allies; Prussia is winning on the Rhine. The result is that Britain and Prussia are at war and France is at war with Austria and has strengthened her alliances.

In the early days of the campaign, the players can choose to play as either Napoleon, for 15 years of glory, or Frederick William III, for endless war. Alternatively, one can adopt a neutral position and control the provincial government of his own nation as well as one or more army corps. The player is also allowed to emulate the historical event of an additional country joining the Grand Coalition and take up the banner of the Imperial Eagle. This represents a significant new feature which must be purchased from the Commissar Division. Napoleon and Frederick William III play out a number of key battles, including the famous Leipzig campaign and the fight for Berlin. The story is fascinating but riddled with historical issues of approximately the magnitude of Desmond’s own.

It is, however, very good fun and … oh … it’s really good fun. Bizarrely, the campaign has just been patched with what I believe to be the first level of Diplomacy. The overall balance is quite good.

Gameplay

Field of Glory II: Wolves at the Gate is a fantastic game. It is more tactical than the first Field of Glory. The games are shorter. Borders are less of an issue. The AI and graphics are genuinely good. For example, the cavalry combat is very tight, to the point where the armies appear to be fighting in a tight bubble. On the other hand, the game is still very credible as the larger points actions, in combination with the way that most of the inter-army battle is conducted, more or less matches the evidence. The game is dynamic and where it departs most significantly from the historical events is in the way that the early phase of the game is set up.
