In the coming days we’ll have an obituary in this space memorializing the life and legacy of musician and restaurateur Herb Alpert, one of the founders of Tijuana’s legendary brass band that has since become a billion-dollar business and one of the most enduring ambassadors of Mexican-American culture.
The great Herb Alpert died on Saturday, Aug. 18, at the age of 91. As we still recall from our youth, “A Taste of Tijuana” was a popular Saturday morning television show on the ABC Network that was hosted by the band’s original lead vocalist, Herb Alpert.
After the Tijuana Brass succumbed to an extended stay in California’s Topanga Canyon, Alpert — born Herbert Morton Plant — took a pair of agents with him on a search for the perfect Mexican restaurant where they could introduce him to the exotic foods and flavors that Mexico had to offer.
On that day in 1959, during a festival in Tijuana, Alpert’s band played a gig at the old Mayan Restaurant, which had been refurbished for them by a local restaurateur by the name of Bernardo Garcia. They didn’t know it at the time, but the old restaurant was about to become a huge success.
At the time, the band had gone out for sandwiches and had eaten nothing all day. The musicians, tired and hungry, sat down at the Mexican restaurant, fully expecting a snack. They were stunned to discover that the restaurant had just ordered out-of-this-world specialty foods as far as they were concerned.
