Autodesk Inc. is a global company. Its revenues were US$3.6 billion in 2018, and it had 24,900 employees as of July 2019.
Autodesk, Inc. was founded in 1982 by Ted Grubb and Duane Lawson, two senior software engineers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and Robert Lewis and Ivan Sutherland. Lawson and Lewis wanted to develop a CAD (computer-aided design) system that they could use at home to design their own furniture. They hired Sutherland and his colleagues to design the program. Their first program, Micro Draft, was released in 1983 for Apple II computers.
In 1988 Autodesk, Inc. released AutoCAD for personal computer (PC) use. The first version was PC-based, running on Apple II and DOS machines. Version 2, released in 1994, was the first software product to run on Windows, and was the first CAD program with the term CAD in its name. (Earlier CAD programs were created by various software companies and released as proprietary, closed systems.) From 1994 to 1997, the first major software release was AutoCAD 95, followed by AutoCAD 98 in 1998. From 1998 to 2002, the first major software release was AutoCAD 2000. (See Figure 1.)

2. Market Trend
There were 25,000 CAD professionals, including 2,600 architectural and engineering professionals, and 55,000 students in the US in 2014. The number of CAD users in the world was more than 400 million in 2014. By 2015, the number of CAD users had increased to 800 million. The number of CAD users in the world is estimated to exceed 1.3 billion by 2020 (see the estimated number of CAD users, Figure 2).

The global Autodesk community includes more than 450,000 registered users who have created more than 75 million online workspaces. As of June 2019, Autodesk had more than 6 billion page views in the past two years (see the number of page views and online workspaces, Figures 3 and 4).

Autodesk product developers create code and build applications for Autodesk products. These product developers often work in teams to build software or add-ons. The code they write can be in the form of Autodesk development tools such as Visual LISP, AutoLISP, ObjectARX, AutoCAD, etc., or can be in a proprietary language such as DirectShow C. Some well-known product developers at Autodesk are Andre Durand, Anton Ipgren, Alain Fournier, Dorna Faifer and Richard Koymans.
AutoCAD is a Certified Product and service on Autodesk’s certification scheme. To get certification as a CAD developer, the applicant must pass both the academic and practical examination. The applicant must have completed at least three years of formal education in a CAD field at an institution accredited by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, United States (ASME) and earn a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree, or a doctoral degree in a CAD-related field.
The certification is available for the following AutoCAD application: AutoCAD 2010, AutoCAD LT 2010 and AutoCAD LT 2012.
2010 and 2012
There are three levels of certification available to AutoCAD 2010 and 2012 users. They are, in order of seniority:
Associate – this certification qualifies AutoCAD users to develop applications for AutoCAD 2010 and 2012.
Bachelor’s Degree – this certification qualifies AutoCAD users to develop applications for AutoCAD 2010 and 2012.
Certified – this certification qualifies AutoCAD users to develop applications for AutoCAD 2010 and 2012.
The qualifications required to achieve these levels of certification are found on the certification website.
C++ developers can obtain certification for AutoCAD 2003, 2005, 2008 and 2010.
Downloadable AutoCAD content is covered by a perpetual license. They include AutoCAD 2010, AutoCAD LT 2010 and AutoCAD LT 2012. These include the core product and all add-on products. After a trial license period, the cost of this software is dependent on how many seats are purchased. Autodesk licenses AutoCAD via a software subscription which must be renewed every year.
