Equipped with the right applications, a computer can be of great help in virtually any domain of activity. When it comes to designing and precision, no other tool is as accurate as a computer. Moreover, specialized applications such as AutoCAD give you the possibility to design nearly anything ranging from art, to complex mechanical parts or even buildings.
Suitable for business environments and experienced users
After a decent amount of time spent installing the application on your system, you are ready to fire it up. Thanks to the office suite like interface, all of its features are cleverly organized in categories. At a first look, it looks easy enough to use, but the abundance of features it comes equipped with leaves room for second thoughts.
Create 2D and 3D objects
You can make use of basic geometrical shapes to define your objects, as well as draw custom ones. Needless to say that you can take advantage of a multitude of tools that aim to enhance precision. A grid can be enabled so that you can easily snap elements, as well as adding anchor points to fully customize shapes.
With a little imagination and patience on your behalf, nearly anything can be achieved. Available tools allow you to create 3D objects from scratch and have them fully enhanced with high-quality textures. A powerful navigation pane is put at your disposal so that you can carefully position the camera to get a clearer view of the area of interest.
Various export possibilities
Similar to a modern web browser, each project is displayed in its own tab. This comes in handy, especially for comparison views. Moreover, layouts and layers also play important roles, as it makes objects handling a little easier.
Sine the application is not the easiest to carry around, requiring a slightly sophisticated machine to properly run, there are several export options put at your disposal so that the projects itself can be moved around.
Aside from the application specific format, you can save as an image file of multiple types, PDF, FBX and a few more. Additionally, it can be sent via email, directly printed out on a sheet of paper, or even sent to a 3D printing service, if available.
To end with
All in all, AutoCAD remains one of the top applications used by professionals to achieve great precision with projects of nearly any type. It encourages usage with incredible offers for student licenses so you get acquainted with its abundance of features early on. A lot can be said about what it can and can't do, but the true surprise lies in discovering it step-by-step.

AutoCAD 2022 [New]

In January 2017, Autodesk announced that it will be replacing AutoCAD with BIMx and AutoCAD LT for future development. This will include the retooling of AutoCAD for the next generation of 3D printing.

The company was founded in 1982 by John Walker (former Autodesk founder and CEO) and John Warnock (former Autodesk co-founder and chief architect). Autodesk Inc. and formerly Autodesk, Inc. are separate entities.

AutoCAD, Autodesk’s first application, was launched with the first Macintosh computer (the Macintosh 128K) and many concepts which later made their way into other Autodesk products.

Other applications were developed as Autodesk’s first strategy was to target engineers, architects and planners. This included (but was not limited to):

CADR: a system to plan, design and construct a house
CST: an integrated system for the creation, analysis and communication of urban form design
DWG: a file format for CAD files
DGN: a database file format
Maya: a suite of applications for 3D animation, visual effects and digital content creation
Creo: a suite of CAD software for industrial design, product development and reverse engineering

The growth of the industry and the rise of home computing has changed the way Autodesk design software is used, with a majority of users now using CAD software on computers. To cope with this growth, Autodesk has launched AutoCAD LT, the company’s next generation of CAD, as a standalone app for desktops.

Features and system requirements

The AutoCAD product line includes AutoCAD (for professional use) and AutoCAD LT (for casual use).

AutoCAD is a symbol-based application, which means all drawing tools have the shape of the tool as the tool’s icon in the application’s interface. The user can customize the tool-bar to show only the tools they need.

The system requirements for AutoCAD vary, but as of March 2020:

Supported platforms

AutoCAD was originally only available for Microsoft Windows operating systems, macOS and Linux. In 2013, the Microsoft Windows client was replaced by AutoCAD LT, which runs on Windows, Linux, and macOS. The latest version is 2019, and will include features from Autodesk 3ds Max and Maya.

The user interface

AutoCAD Full Product Key

In AutoCAD DWG and DXF files:
CAD Data (including drawing scale, dimensions, etc.)
Attributes (color, linetype, lineweight, etc.)
Drawing Manager (current linetype, lineweight, etc.)
Documents (coordinate system, layers, etc.)
Layers (using various techniques)
Objects (construction items, text, etc.)

Autodesk AutoCAD 2014 features several new objects, including:
Autodesk Align, a new alignment tool.
Autodesk Architecture, adding new features such as interior and exterior walls, doors, windows, and roof.
New tools to model, design and develop systems:
Modify System, for making changes to CAD drawings (in AutoCAD DWG format).
New dialog box for system design: System Properties.
New dialog box for changing model dimensions: Set Dimensions.
New dialog box for comparing segments: Compare Segments.
AutoCAD Developer Tools, adding tools such as JavaScript Viewer, XML Viewer, YAML Viewer and JS Viewer.

Autodesk announced that in AutoCAD 2013, there will be some performance improvements. According to the release notes, “AutoCAD 2013 provides better handling of aspects of the drawing editor, such as measuring line width, editing and converting line width, the conversion of x, y, and angle coordinates to true Euclidean coordinates, and various typographic behaviors.” Some of these improvements also exist in previous releases, but were not documented.

In 2008, Autodesk released a new release of AutoCAD, AutoCAD 2008, which introduced the ability to create custom 2D and 3D shapes.

In 2013, Autodesk released Autodesk Design Review and Revit Architecture. Autodesk Design Review is used to create and evaluate 2D and 3D CAD drawings. Revit Architecture is a suite of software programs that uses a library of standardized building components.

In 2014, Autodesk released AutoCAD 2014, which includes integrated functions of the industry-standard CATIA and NX CAD software products, such as direct creation of associative design elements.

In 2015, Autodesk released AutoCAD 2015, which included new functions and more powerful user interface, such as the ability to have multiple documents open at once and the ability to make and edit changes to multiple documents at

What’s New in the AutoCAD?

The Import/Markup Assistant is the ideal tool for designing around AutoCAD in a fast and accurate way. When you are working on a difficult or complex design, you can import feedback from paper into AutoCAD to streamline your design processes.

When you are ready to move on to the next design step, you can export the drawing as a PDF, including the imported feedback. All the markings and feedback are incorporated into your PDFs, making it easy to work with the design and your changes on the web or in other applications, such as Adobe InDesign.

Eliminate the need to track changes in design and paper with markup assistant.

Markup Assist can import feedback from existing paper designs, including AutoCAD annotated PDFs, or from printed paper or PDFs. If you choose to import from a paper document, the markup assist can also retain its original resolution. If you choose to import from a PDF file, your drawing’s resolution is preserved, and the import can be scaled to any size.

To import feedback, go to the Draw tab, click on the Markup Assistant icon, and click on the Import button. You can import into a selected drawing or into a new drawing.

Import feedback from the Paper tab, and include any markup you wish.

When you select to export your drawings as PDFs, your new drawings are exported to PDF with your annotations. You can also export your drawings to DWG, DXF, DWF, DWFx, DWF, and SVG.

Importing and exporting is now available in both the AutoCAD 2018 and 2019 version.

Design Tab Improvements:

Select to drag and rotate any object, like a selected part or layer, while holding down the Alt key to keep your view locked on the selected element.

During rotation, you can increase or decrease your rotation angles, including counterclockwise or clockwise, by pressing the Tab key on your keyboard.

When you are in the viewport, hold down the Shift key to create a mirror view of your active layers.

The Select tool now has increased precision. When you select a point on your drawing, the top of the drawing is dragged down to that same point, which makes it easier to get close to the selected element.

When you are using the Grid tool, click on a previously selected point to set the grid to that point.
