I just came across this interesting documentary that has been posted on Vimeo and embedded below. I have to admit I haven’t seen it before, and am interested to find out more. After watching it, I decided to google some interesting facts about the topic.

It turns out that this documentary is actually the first part of a two-part series produced by the BBC. It actually starts off with a bit of a rant – with basically very little factual basis. The idea is that a lot of fisherman, such as the ones interviewed, end up drowning because they get caught in the undertow of a coastal current. It’s a pretty hard hitting first half-hour. For some people, this would be ok – people who live on the coast are probably somewhat familiar with current direction. But for many people, it might seem a bit extreme. This makes it harder to think about the idea when watching it.

The idea of ‘currents’ is that a current flows towards a body of water. In most cases, currents go towards the centre of the body of water, but there are exceptions. An interesting example is that of the River Severn. It flows through Shropshire, and then splits into two. In the case of Shropshire, the current is split into two parts. The Severn flows towards its centre of Shrewsbury, and the Usk flows towards Newport. So although one river is flowing towards its centre, the other is flowing away from its centre. The same principle applies in coastal waters – the current is always towards the centre of the sea. This is because the sea is always curved, and the current is flowing along the line where the sea is curved, like the inside edge of a bottle.
