Understanding the mechanisms driving local variation in bacterial community structure within and between ecosystems is one of the primary goals of ecological research. A unique wetland ecosystem, the Big Beaver Muck Ecosystem, was explored to determine the effects of precipitation and salinity on bacterial community structure and the extent to which differing levels of precipitation and salinity result in significant spatial variation in community structure. The upper layer of the wetland (2-m depth) was characterized by low nutrient and high (NH4)2SO4 concentrations. For the upper layer, only the percent distribution of the bacterial phyla varied with depth and distance, with results indicating a reduction in bacterial abundance with distance from the shore. In the lower layer (8-m depth), all of the taxonomic groups showed variability with distance
